UNHRC core group concerned over Sri Lanka’s lack of progress on human rights

The core group, comprising, Canada, Germany, North Macedonia, Malawi, Montenegro and the UK, has also called for the safety of former Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Shani Abeysekera’s safety to be ensured. Abeysekara was released on bail on June 16, after the Court of Appeal slammed police for using “concocted stories” to incarcerate their own top detective.

Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission writes to police chief on custodial deaths

In a letter written to the IGP dated May 17, the HRCSL said the killing of alleged gang leader Dharmakeerthi Tharaka Perera Wijesekara alias Kosgoda Tharaka, who police claimed had died following a shootout on May 13, and that of Mabulage Dineth Melan Mabula alias Uru Juwa who died on May 11 under similar circumstances, has put the rule of law in a precarious position.
